Clashes are worsening between the two sides
The Sri Lankan military says it has killed eight Tamil Tigers in the northern district of Vavuniya. The Tigers have not commented on the claim.

It also said two villagers employed as guards were killed by a rebel attack in the district of Anuradhapura.

Earlier this week, dozens soldiers and rebels were reported killed or wounded in fighting in the north.

Fighting between troops and the rebels, who want autonomy in the north and east, has worsened in recent months.
